The codes and standards that govern stationary storage

Code compliance is not a late-stage formality. It constrains siting, spacing and enclosure choice from the first sketch.

Fire code is the constraint that most often forces a redesign late in a storage project. Separation distances, enclosure ratings, room construction and fire service access all trace back to a small number of standards, and they are enforced by an authority having jurisdiction that has discretion in how it applies them.

These pages explain what each standard covers and where it bites, so the code conversation happens before the site layout is fixed rather than after.

    The Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems — the document that drives separation, siting and enclosure requirements.

    UL 9540 certifies the system as equipment. UL 9540A is the thermal runaway fire propagation test method whose report the AHJ will ask for.
